Usually the suction intake air is heated up in commercial vehicles to improve the starting capacity and emissions.

The heating power requirement in large capacity diesel engines leads here to the use of flame starting systems.

For diesel cold starting in commercial vehicles, BERU flame start systems represent a system solution: from the flame glow plug, through the control unit, the temperature sensor, the latest generation of solenoid valves and the indicators, all the way to the switching unit, renowned commercial vehicle manufacturers and engine manufacturers equip their engines with BERU flame start systems ex works.

Electrical heating flanges can be used as an alternative for heating up the suction intake air. These are used mainly in commercial vehicle engines with a capacity of up to 12 litres. A distinction is made here between uncontrolled and controlled heating flanges.

The electronically controlled Instant Start System (ISS) has now also established itself in the area of light duty vehicles and up to a cylinder capacity of approx. 0.9 l.

With this, BERU Systems has developed a cold start system to series maturity which starts as fast as a petrol engine even at extreme temperatures of –25 degrees. The heating flange used here in addition to the glow plugs in the ISS of the 2nd generation improves the engine running at low temperatures additionally by heating up the suction intake air.

The flame glow plug: fuel and intake air mix in the evaporator tube. The mixture ignites on the glow element. The protective tube quietens the flame and fosters its stability. The flame glow plug ensures reliable starting that protects the engine, even at extremely low temperatures.
